Why Baptism?

WHY BAPTISM?

Baptism is the next step for every new believer in Christ. Baptism does not save but is a picture of the work that Jesus has done in a person’s heart. Baptism illustrates that we identify with the finished work of Jesus Christ. First Corinthians 15:3-4 says, “For I passed on to you as most important what I also received: that Christ died for our sins according to the Scriptures, that he was buried, that he was raised on the third day according to the Scriptures.”

Baptism illustrates Christ’s death, burial, and resurrection and shows that we have a new life in Jesus Christ. We are saved by Jesus Christ — not baptism.

Additionally, we follow Jesus’ example in baptism. You can read about His baptism in Mark 1:9. He also commanded that all believers to be baptized in Matthew 28:19-20.

At SweetWater Church, we baptize by immersion because the New Testament word for baptize means “to dip under” or “to immerse” in water. This is the method of baptism throughout the New Testament.
